about ≈45º
an exploration of my parallel's universe

About ≈45º
about45degrees is a collection of stories, sounds and photographs that are mostly gathered from the area near my home in northern Michigan. I am particularly interested in the stories that we tell ourselves and others, and the ways in which these stories intersect with and diverge from each other, depending on the situations in which we find ourselves. My dear teacher and mentor, Bobbie Louise Hawkins, implored each of us to "have respect for the inherent wisdom and logic of our natural speaking voice." This is easier said than done, and the process of working one's way back to one's self seems to somehow more often involve subtraction rather than addition. As my friend Bb says, "Something has to have been working right to have gotten from then to now. And this is what we're left with." Indeed. Let's have a look.
I earned my MFA in Writing and Poetics, Fiction, from The Naropa Institute, now Naropa University, and I successfully defended a novel to fulfill my PhD creative dissertation option from UIC's Program for Writers.
